Had a great trip over Thanksgiving back home. Only four days, but it was a nice break. We went to the British Museum...one of my favourite places in the world. It's changed ALOT since I was last there and is much lighter and airier. We went primarily to sate #2 Son's thirst for all things Ancient Egyptian and he got a huge kick out of seeing the huge statues, sarcophaguses (sarcophagi?), and of course, mummies!
And next door to the Egyptian section is my favourite, the Greek/Roman. Had to go visit my fave, Mausollos (that is one fine statue) and the Parthenon marbles (aka the frieze stolen by Lord Elgin).
Then we went off to Madame Tussaud's, also vastly changed from last time I was there years ago. First room you go into is like a movie premiere with various stars standing around. #1 Son had his photo taken next to Sarah Michelle Gellar...but wouldn't put his arm around her and #2 Son had his photo taken next to Samuel L. Jackson. My observations: Morgan Freeman was surprisingly tall, and Mel Gibson equally surprisingly small, and The Rock was cute holding someone's handbag (LOL!) The models, though were excellent. Next was the History/World leaders room...although why David Beckham was in there, I don't know. And Bush must be blind...spends months looking for Saddam, and there he was, right in front of him! *eg*
The biggest change was the Chamber of Horrors. Used to be all waxworks, but now they have a live show...and it's scary! It's almost pitch black with just a strobe light, and with live actors playing various psychopathic, mass murderers like Hannibal Lecter and Jack the Ripper. And as you walk around these narrow paths they sneak up on you. It was freaky!
Also new was that the family ticket also got you directly into the Planetarium next door. Wasn't that impressive...as they'd substituted science for "entertainment" by way of doing a journey through space via the Disney (?) film "Treasure Planet", which I never saw in the first place.
On another subject: came across this cartoon of "Troy" today.
