I've got a job!

I had an interview on Tuesday and have just found out that I have a job. It's not a great job (retail) or great money, but it's better than nothing. And for a time I've been feeling that I need to do something to get some money of my own and to get me get me out of the house.

I'm going to be working at the BX in their clothing department (for you non-military types that's the Base Exchange, a department store on Air Force bases). I've never done anything like this before, never worked in retail, so it's going to be a whole new experience. One I'm both looking forward to and dreading. I also swore years ago that I would never work for AAFES (the company that operates the BX and several other military stores and facilities), but they are pretty much the only outlet for employment over here.

It's a temporary/parttime job, but the HR person seemed pretty confident that it will turn permanent in a few months. We'll see...I may like the fact that it's only temp. *g*

Yay! I know we talked about you working there. Heheee... the BX, not bad. Do you get an extra discount on things for working there?

I think it will be great for you for the reasons you said and just to meet more folks. *Hugs*

Hehehe...I don't know about a discount yet, but given this is AAFES if there is one, it's probably not very great!

*hugs*

Retail sales isn't the worst job you could have... just remember the best way to get the last laugh is always be nice. No matter what the irrate customer says... be nice... because once they get outside and are ranting to their friends, husband, etc... the ONLY thing they will be able to think to say about you was that you were nice.... ::grins::... makes them feel like asses all by themselves!

I'm back in retail sales myself... working at a local book/music/video store in the book department... actually I've recently been made the magazine manager, which I like alot because I get to work at my own pace and go home when I'm done... the best part is, I think the discount... it's a very nice one on books! Woot!... well... maybe the best part is it allows me to have a pony! Woot!

Good luck with your new job! Enjoy!

Hey you!! *g*

Oh, I shall be as sweet and nice and helpful as I possibly can. I can do that without any problem. And Mr/Ms irate customer can be stewing.

Oooh...now, I would love to work in a bookstore. That is one retail job that I wouldn't mind at all! Maybe I could, after a while, get myself posted to the BX bookstore. I had a friend who managed the one at Spang, and because he had very similar tastes to my own...there was a period where they had really good selection (Pratchett! Gaiman!). Sadly, he no longer works there.

The really sad part of that is that Gaiman needs to write faster... seriously needs to put more stuff out there.

Here is a book for you, it's by Ian Graham and is called "Monument"... lovely dark fantasy where the "hero" is nasty and icky and wonderful to hate... winds up saving the world simply because he is looking out for numero uno! I loved it! A very good debut book.

Another new one to look forward to in June is one called "The Lies of Locke Lamora" written by Scott Lynch... grand story about a troupe of theives... well one theif in particular, well, they aren't your ordinary second story jobbers... they are fantastic con artists... it's a fantastical pyramid type scheme they get going, in a fantasy/sci-fi kinda world... and it all hits the fan in a very spectacular way... Mr. Lynch's writing is a little verbose, but I tend to like that now and again... and he never loses the story in description. This is the first book in a long time that had me laughing and shouting out loud as I read. I do love getting those advanced reading copies! Makes my job all the more fun!

I've been at this store a year and a half now and have my own following of readers, customers who come in looking for me so we can pass titles back and forth... I am the Queen of the Sci-Fi section! Woot! There may be some really crappy corporate things to cope with but the books make it all worth while!

Oooh...I shall have to make a note of them, and add them to my list. :D Although I'm doing an English class right now, so I'm stuck reading Dickens' "Bleak House"

And yes, you are the Queen of Sci-Fi/Fantasy....it is your calling!

And I realize that it's probably quite redundant to rec a book to you, as you're probably familiar with it, but not so long ago I finished Anne Bishop's "Black Jewels Trilogy." First series in a loooong time that I totally fell in love with. For me, it had everything...made me laugh, cry, and fall in love with all the main characters for quite different reasons...and the bad guys are really hateable. The world she built for it is fascinating in its complexity, and I can't wait to tackle the other books she's set there.

::laughs:: oh now that is too funny! I just picked up that trilogy off the bargain table... thought it looked wonderful! The problem, or the joy I suppose of living overseas so darned much over the past 20 years is it is hard to keep up with the book scene when you only have the Stars and Stripes... now the Bookmark... to keep you up on the books out there... some of the "older" stuff is new and exciting to me. The trick is keeping a balance of "catching up" and staying on the cutting edge... advance reading copies really help in this endeavor... Don't know if you do romances at all, but just read one by Shana Abe called The Smoke Thief... was a lovely story with a great story line, I was entranced... dragons... they were dragons... ::grins::... maybe I should just start doing book reviews in my journal... might actually get some action!

When I was in England I didn't read much SciFi or fantasy at all... I found myself enamoured with what I dubbed "British Fiction"... it ran the gambit, but I haunted the charity shops gobbling up authors I had never heard of before in the states... I found Phillipa Gregory, James Herbert, Elizebeth Chadwick just to name a few. I just picked up another one of my British Fictions off the bargain table at work, it was called "Seeing George"... such a wonderful little tale about growing old... took me maybe an afternoon to read it. Sucha lovely story... and made me kinda home sick for England reading about their daily life of tea and shops and gardens and such... ::grins::.. boy I would love to go back... anywho...

(by the way... George was a dragon that befriended a young lady early in her life)

Don't ever hesitate to recommend a book, no matter how widely read a person is, you NEVER know what they have yet to discover... and there is always something else out there to discover!

Hugs!

W00t!! What a great coincidence! I hope you'll love it as much as I do...I was totally sucked into it. There's also "Dreams Made Flesh" which is four stories about the characters in the trilogy. I haven't read that yet, but I'm looking forward to it. And I have my flist to thank for getting me into TBJ trilogy. One friend roleplays one of the characters and I became really intrigued by what she wrote so when I got a gift coupon from Amazon, I just had to order it.

Otherwise I'm still really into the historical fiction and my current 'fix' in that area is the "Flashman" series by George MacDonald Fraser...about a rogue, a coward, a womanizer, a bully, and military hero. It's just a riot. And he's been in just about every major (and many minor) historical event of the 19th century.
