SCHOOL'S OUT FOR....
...two weeks.... Doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
These past couple of weeks have been busy school wise, just trying to get the stuff down. 8 week class (creative writing) and we had the first 6 weeks to do the first assignment, and two weeks to receive and do the second assignment...nothing like organizing your time well. But at least I'm pretty certain to come away with an A...the prof was quite impressed by my Returning Home story. Once I have the final draft posted on the class website (have to have that done by Tues) I'll post it somewhere where it can be found.
But I'm just glad that Geology is over...ugh! I'd just be happy to get a C from that class.
Last Sunday was a good time. We went on a bus trip from base to 3 castles in the local area. First stop was Cochem along the Mosel river. Bloody steep climb, but well worth it with great views of the city of Cochem and the Mosel. The castle was destroyed by the French in Napoleon's time, but someone bought the ruins and rebuilt it...so the feeling of age didn't come through that strongly, but it was still very good...and the only castle that we could take photos inside.
The second castle was Burg Eltz, which is in a small, narrow valley and is probably the finest preserved medieval castle in Germany. And the only one along the Mosel not destroyed by the French...the family who owns it (and have done for over 800 years) did a deal with them. Quite reminded me of Methos...this family always went with the winner *g*. And unlike the others, I felt a real sense of history there. Even steeper, longer bloody climb back up from the castle.
The final one was Burg Pyrmont, another ruin that has partly been restored. No long climb to or from it, but a very high tower with a long, narrow spiral staircase...but the view is great once you got up there. Could see for miles, including Burg Eltz in the distance.
An exhausting day, but enjoyed by everyone...even the kids!!
This weekend may take a trip out to Waterloo or maybe Verdun, which, I hear, has an excellent WWI museum/memorial.
