Review

Watched The Italian Job this evening. Have been looking to rent this for a little while, and eventually had to get the VHS as the DVD was never in. I wasn't sure if I would like this; I loved the original movie -- my favourite Michael Caine film after Alfie -- but I wanted to see Jason Statham as "Handsome" Rob. I was pleasantly surprised.

It's not, by any means, a brilliant film, but it's FUN! I enjoyed it. The characters were all good, and some quite original (like Seth Green's character as the true creator of Napster). And although it's not a remake of the original, it does pay homage to it. Most obviously through the updated Mini-Coopers, but also by racing through buildings...in this case a subway station and the traffic jams.

And there are some lovely humourous pieces also, especially from Green's character from insisting he created Napster and his roomie stole it as he was "nap"ping to being unable to stop his motorbike, falling off it and being unable to pick it up again (those things are very heavy), and his imitation of Rob chatting up women is wonderful. "Handsome" Rob was very nice *smile*...a very similar character (although not as tough) to The Transporter...he's the car man. He's called "Handsome" because he thinks a lot of himself and his ability with women. I did like when he is supposed to be timing their getaway route and gets stuck in LA traffic.

Also, lovely to see Donald Sutherland. Well worth seeing.

I finished watching the movie and all the extras late last night. According to the director, Seth Green's imitation of "Handsome Rob" chatting up Becky was ad-libbed. The director was so into what Seth was doing he forgot to call 'Cut!' *lol*

I really enjoyed the scenes shot in Venice. The director said they asked for and got special permission to race through the canals. Jason Statham had about two hours training and practice before going up to 45 MPH.

Oh cool! I've got the DVD on order (along with the original, great deal *g*)...the commentary sounds great. And that Seth's ad-lib was kept in is just wonderful...nice director!
