Beta Reader Appreciation Day

Who was your first beta? Megan
What was the story and fandom? Sharpe's Rebels - Sharpe, Blake's 7 x-over
Are you still writing in that fandom? No
Which beta(s) had the most impact on your writing? Caz, Isolde, Amand-r
What is your favorite story or series of what you've written? Second Chances
Why? I look back on it, and I've improved technically as a writer since then, but I'm still very happy and proud at what I did in that story.
Who was the beta? Amand-r, Caz
What are your next two favorite stories or series of what you've written? Dark-Over Writing Collaboration and an offshoot, my Hsu Danmei stories.
Why? Because it's very rewarding, fun and challenging to co-write. And to create a character that has developed a life of his own is both fulfilling and scary.

Who beta-ed your most recent story? Caz
What do you consider the most important quality in a beta reader? They want to make your story as good as possible and can also point out mistakes that you are too close to see.
What do you consider the most important thing to be accomplished in a beta read? (Grammar, spelling, continuity, plot, character, canon, fanon, hand holding, other?) Whatever's needed...to catch the typos, grammar errors, but also to point out any discrepancy/holes in the plot or continuity.
How has your writing changed from your first stories? I've learned that detail enhances the picture that a story paints. It enriches a story, drawing a reader in.
What do you attribute that to? My early stories were very light on detail...just straight to the "action" or just reams of dialogue when a description could outline it better perhaps. Just practice, reading others stories and what works and doesn't work in those.
