30 Days of TV Meme

Haven't done this in a while, so here's the next one, and maybe I can do this more regularly again! Maybe.

Day 08. A show everyone should watch

Usually I don't mind what people watch, or rather if I want them to get hooked on a show I like. However there are two shows that, yes, I feel everyone should watch and if they try them, I feel -- or at least hope -- they will enjoy them just as much as me.

And it should come to no surprise that I've mentioned both in this meme before.

Galavant. It only ran for two short seasons as a mid-season 'fill-in' show for ABC, and there are, I think, just 18 half-hour episodes. It stars Joshua Sasse, Karen David, Timothy Omundson, Mallory Jansen, and Vinnie Jones. It tells the tale of Sir Galavant (Sasse) and begins with him trying to rescue his 'One True Love' Madelena (Jansen) who has been kidnapped and forced to marry the evil King Richard (Omundson). Except...she doesn't want rescuing, she wants to be Queen and have all the money and jewels. While Galavant drowns his sorrows in flagon after flagon, supported by his squire, Sid (Luke Youngblood), the newlyweds aren't getting along. Madelena's eye is roving -- mostly to the Jester -- and Richard with the help of his King's Guard, Gareth (Jones) invade the neighbouring kingdom and while threatening her parents with death if she doesn't cooperate, sends the Princess Isabella (David) to trick Galavant into walking into Richard's trap. Things, of course, don't go to plan and Galavant, Isabella, and Sid have several adventures one their Hero's Journey. And that's just the first season

Now, during the course of the series, they turn many fantasy tropes on the head, break the fourth wall, and the thing that makes the show are the musical numbers. Believe me, once you see Vinnie "The Psycho" Jones dancing and signing a love song, you've seen everything! There are also tons of guest stars, such as Anthony Stuart Head, Rutger Hauer, Weird Al Yankovic, Ricky Gervais, Reese Shearsmith, Hugh Bonneville, John Stamos, Robert Lindsay, and Kylie Minogue to name just a few.

It's hard to pin down my favourite songs, but three are:

"A New Season (Suck it, Cancellation Bear)"
"Build a New Tomorrow, Today"
"Lords of the Sea"

With an Honourary Mention to "If I Could Share My Life with You" for featuring a line about invading Huns. *g*

Oh, and there's also a real, live dragon!

DC's Legends of Tomorrow Okay, so you can forget the first season (except for any scenes between Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) and Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell)). Start at the second season when the writers hit on a brilliant way to take the show which had suffered from a weak villain and overly serious characters...and decided to just have fun, while still being superheroes -- or rather Legends -- as they travel and cause havoc wherever they go in SpaceTime. The crew is mostly made up of Sara Lance aka White Canary (Caity Loitz), Ray Palmer/the Atom (Brandon Routh), Nate Heywood/Commander Steel (Nick Zano), and Mick Rory/Heatwave with others coming and going. With the addition of a gleefully evil villain, Damian Darhk (Neal O'Donough) who is vastly improved from his run on "Arrow" and mage John Constantine (Matt Ryan) they really hit their stride, and of course Beebo.

It's hard to pin it down, other than it being part of, sometimes loosely, the Arrowverse and even more loosely science-fiction, but it is F-U-N!
