Another quick update!
Arrived safe and sound in Edinburgh yesterday. Had a great view of the Forth Bridge as the plane came into land, which was cool as, sadly, Edinburgh is pretty much all I'll get to do of Scotland on this visit...schedule is way too packed for anything else.
Seeing as by the time we got done with the airport and picked up the rental car, it was pushing mid afternoon, so we are doing the city centre today. Instead we found a cinema and watched X-Men: First Class. Brilliant! Okay, I knew Michael Fassbender would be great as Erik Lensherr/Magneto but he was even better than that! That man can do intensity, or what. Sure, there were some corny/stretching the suspension of disbelief moments (a hovering SR-71, wtf?), but nowhere near enough to spoil the rest. And there is a great cameo appearance in there as well!

I liked him, but I was so use to the Magneto in the comic books having physically been turned back in age to something closer to Michael I was thrown by it a bit. I understood the choice of using the older actor. They wanted to have him be a Holocaust survivor, and not spend time explaining how he could be that old but look that young. It also didn't hurt that Ian was so excited about playing Magneto he was sharing stuff from the production online. I got my first look at the design of Magneto's uniform in the films from Ian himself.
...Michael was the absolute right choice to play his younger version...
I've had someone tell me that they'd only seen the movies, didn't care for Charles and Magneto in the films where they were older, but seeing First Class made everything make more sense to them. Not to mention that they said that they wanted to see more of young Charles and Erik. I was so happy to hear it.
...preferably from Charles...
Heh, I told my dad after I saw first class that it would make for a spike in Charles/Erik fic. It even lead to someone on my flist posting one. I told them that Charles/Erik is a classic slash pairing like Kirk/Spock or Duncan/Methos. I never saw it reading the books, but the chemistry between Michael and James was so great I can see it between their characters. Course I've always wanted Erik to myself.
