Another quick update!

Arrived safe and sound in Edinburgh yesterday. Had a great view of the Forth Bridge as the plane came into land, which was cool as, sadly, Edinburgh is pretty much all I'll get to do of Scotland on this visit...schedule is way too packed for anything else.

Seeing as by the time we got done with the airport and picked up the rental car, it was pushing mid afternoon, so we are doing the city centre today. Instead we found a cinema and watched X-Men: First Class. Brilliant! Okay, I knew Michael Fassbender would be great as Erik Lensherr/Magneto but he was even better than that! That man can do intensity, or what. Sure, there were some corny/stretching the suspension of disbelief moments (a hovering SR-71, wtf?), but nowhere near enough to spoil the rest. And there is a great cameo appearance in there as well!

I just saw it last night!

The hovering part made me laugh too. Though, I guess, since whatshisname built it himself, maybe he just modified it so that it's able to hover? It WOULD be doable... though I didn't see any modifications that would be necessary for that...

Yeah, me and the kid discussed that possibility after, but it came out of nowhere, not even a throw away line about a certain modification...so was a really (unintentionally) funny part.

Hank McCoy/Beast built it in the film, and yeah he could've modified it. Given how long it's been since I read a book, I don't remember how it was built in the comics, but I think it included some alien technology there and could do a lot of stuff an ordinary terrestrial Blackbird could never do.

As someone who has only seen the X-Men films and not the comics, I think some explanation would have helped a lot, even a brief line that it had been specially modified by Hank using alien tech or whatever. As it was just seeing it hovering gave me a WTF moment and nearly turned a tense, dramatic moment into a funny one.

Sounds like. I didn't give it a second thought because I'm so use to thinking of her as so much more than your average Blackbird. It should've been run by a non-book geek to check for the WTF factor. I mean a quick check of the wiki says, "Some writers have referred to this design as the 'SR-73' or the 'SR-77'," as a way of emphasizing her not being an SR-71. Also looking at the wiki I remembered right about her eventually having alien tech. It also says, "alien (Shi'ar) technology, including weapon systems, holographic active camouflage, and engines capable of hypersonic speeds." ;)
