And some sad news

I've just heard that Patrick McGoohan, star of the cult TV series The Prisoner and before that DangerMan (in the U.S. Secret Agent Man) died after a short illness. He was 80 years old.

I loved The Prisoner...even if I still don't understand all of it, it was a piece of brilliant television which has never really been equalled. Plus Portmeirion is a lovely location!.

Rest in Peace and be a Free Man!

I was telling my friend [livejournal.com profile] hollyilex that I used to watch re-runs of The Prisoner on PBS late at night when I was about 13 and it scared the heck out of me. There was something deeply deeply unsettling about the way that show was filmed, the ominous undertones and just strangeness they managed to bring to it. It just had an eerie quality to it. Still get chills when I think about it.

It was a very unsettling show, with a very bizarre and unsettling ending, but it was unique and still is (IMHO). I was fifteen when I first saw it, on the recommendation of my best friend's mum...and my friend and I were hooked. I have the series on VHS and plan eventually to get the DVDs.

I heard this earlier today. Yes, it is very sad indeed. I remember my grandparents watching that show when I was like four years old! *g*

That was early! I first saw The Prisoner at 15, when it was broadcast on the then brand new British Channel 4, after my friend's mum told us about it. The amazing thing is that it was also McGoohan who conceived and co-wrote much of the 17 episodes, after the demands made on him for Secret Agent Man left him bitter, and it does reflect much of what was topical in the 60s as a society, and even today.

Portmeirion, where the exteriors were filmed, is also a wonderful place...and a perfectly bizarre village. *g*

Very sad news, also that Riccardo passed away as well. Both actors ahead of their time.

And I know I owe you an email, which I will get to at some point, I promise!!

Ricardo Montalban. The best Star Trek villain of all time, among other great things.
