Review: Indiana Jones

I just got back from seeing this, and...well, it was great seeing Indy again! I got a thrill just listening to the theme once again. Harrison Ford is looking Goooooooood!! I always love Ray Winstone, a tremendous actor...as is John Hurt. The whip is always a favourite, and to see that Anthony de Longis (Consone in HL) was the whipmaster, made me silently squee!

But despite all of that, I was left kind of flat by it. Some of it was the fact that it was, as in most movies today, too much action. It went from one big action sequence to another, just to get those special effects in. And there was not enough adventure of the old Indy type. There were times when I wondered what Spielberg film I was watching...Indiana Jones or E.T. Please, Indy is an archaeologist, not an alien hunter. I liked the faux history of the Ark of the Covenenant and the Holy Grail...not having aliens be behind it all.

I thought it would be better. Instead I left feeling that I'd seen it done before and done better in both The Mummy films....and both National Treasures. In fact, I felt that Indy had taken some things directly from both of them...and not as well. Those films were inspired by the Indiana Jones series, and surpassed them in both SFX and plot. Which is a great shame.

It was good...it just could have been better if a little more thought had gone into the story. Who couldn't have guessed that the kid was Indy's son and that Ray Winstone was always working for the Commies? I did like the part where he was out at the Nevada Test Range and got caught in a nuclear test...that was a good touch with all the mannequins.

Well, I thought that the aliens fit perfectly into it being set in the 50s. *G* I really enjoyed it!

(and while I really like The Mummy and the first NT movie (the second, IMO, wasn't even close to being as good as the first), I don't think they surpass any of the Indy movies *G*)

I enjoyed it to a point, but it just left me feeling kind of unsatisfied. And yes, the aliens didn't work for me, but then the whole Roswell thing doesn't for me anyway. I don't know, but I just found this too...Indy Jones meets E.T. *g*

I agree with you about NT2, although I still enjoyed that as a mindless adventure romp. I just had the feeling new Indy took things that were clearly from those movies, and considering Lucasfilm was behind it, the effects were not as good, IMO. :)

However, Harrison Ford will ALWAYS rock as Indy!!
