Torchwood and Nim

Okay, I haven't seen this yet, but I've seen all the spoilers. Having been shocked back in 1981 by the series finale of "Blake's 7" and come to view that as the best way to end a show EVA, the apparent deaths of two members of Torchwood sound 1)a little pale by comparison (especially as one was already dead) and 2) a beautiful, fantastic way to end a season. I can't wait to see it.

It's definitely a kid's film. If you think back to the Disney movies of old, this would fit right in with those. I usually find the kids in these annoyingly precocious, but Abigail Breslin was very real most of the way through it as the title character. Jodie Foster does a great comedic turn as the neurotic Alex(andra) Rover. Gerard as Jack Rusoe, Nim's father was gorgeous, and the glasses made him even sexier for some reason. And out there on the boat, in the storm, trying to not sink and get back to the island was lovely on two counts....1) wet clothes clinging to his skin, and 2) As [REDACTED] pointed out to me, that was Mark on his boat...especially when he roared before being thrown over board. Perfect.

But for anyone who writes, or who has muses inhabiting their brains, the best part of this movie are the bits between Alex the writer and Alex the muse (Gerard again). So many times I've had similar conversations, notably at the end when Alex the writer tells him "I created you. You have to do what I say!" Yeah, been there. And earlier when he ends up in a volcano because she has no idea how to write him out of that.

But I left feeling a bit dissatisfied with it. Even bearing in mind it was a kid's film, so I wasn't expecting any great, complex plot or acting, the end fell a bit flat. Nim, having got rid of the cruise ship, didn't need rescuing by the time Alex arrived, so that was a bit pointless, especially when Jack made it home the next morning. I felt it would have worked to more of a climax if Alex had arrived a little earlier to help Nim oust the tourists.

Now, off to catch up from the weekend. Prompts then tags.
